Switchboard Upgrades & Mains Redcliffe Peninsula & Moreton Bay
JJ Brothers Electrical & Air completes switchboard upgrades, safety switch installations, mains upgrades and three-phase work across the Redcliffe Peninsula, Moreton Bay and Brisbane. Whether you're replacing an old fuse board, adding capacity for air conditioning or an EV charger, or bringing a property up to date, the work is completed to current electrical standards and tested before we leave.
The heart of your electrical system
Every circuit in your property runs through the switchboard. Older boards were built for far less demand than today's homes and businesses place on them, and many still use rewireable ceramic fuses with little or no safety switch protection.
A modern switchboard uses circuit breakers and safety switches (RCDs), which are designed to switch off power in a fraction of a second when they detect electricity leaking to earth. A new board is also where you gain room for the circuits you'll want to add — air conditioning, an induction cooktop, a pool pump or an EV charger.
Mains upgrades and three-phase installations involve the electricity network as well as the electrician. Where the work needs network approval or a meter change, we'll explain the process and what's needed from Energex and your electricity retailer.
Switchboard & mains services
Switchboard replacements, mains upgrades, safety switches and three-phase installations, completed to current electrical standards.
Switchboard replacements
Old fuse boards and outdated switchboards replaced with modern boards using circuit breakers and safety switch protection.
Safety switches
Safety switches (RCDs) added to protect your circuits, reducing the risk of electric shock from faulty appliances or wiring.
Mains upgrades
Upgrading the supply cabling to your switchboard when a property needs more capacity.
Three-phase
Three-phase power for properties running large loads, such as bigger air-conditioning systems, workshop equipment or high-powered EV chargers.
Room for new circuits
Space and capacity added so new air conditioning, cooktops or EV chargers can be connected safely.
Homes & businesses
Switchboard and mains work for houses, units, shops, offices and workshops.
Straightforward from start to finish
We keep the process clear and communicate at every stage, from your first enquiry through to testing and documentation.
Photos & details
Send photos of your switchboard and meter box, and tell us what you're planning to add. It helps us understand the job before we arrive.
Inspection & quote
We inspect the board and existing installation where needed, then provide a detailed quote covering the scope of work.
Scheduled changeover
We book a time that suits, let you know how long the power will be off, and complete the changeover.
Test & certify
Every circuit is tested and labelled, and you receive the required electrical safety documentation.
Common questions answered
How do I know if my switchboard needs upgrading?
If your board still has ceramic fuses, has no safety switches or only one, trips regularly, or doesn't have room for the circuits you want to add, it's likely due for an upgrade. Heat marks, buzzing or a burning smell at the board should be checked straight away.
What's the difference between a safety switch and a circuit breaker?
A circuit breaker protects the wiring by switching off when a circuit is overloaded or short-circuits. A safety switch (RCD) protects people — it switches off in a fraction of a second when it detects electricity leaking to earth, such as through a person. A modern switchboard uses both.
How long will the power be off during a switchboard upgrade?
It depends on the size of the board and the condition of the existing installation, so we'll tell you the expected timing before work starts. That way you can plan around the time the power is off.
Do I need three-phase power?
Most homes don't. Three-phase is usually only needed for large loads, such as bigger ducted air-conditioning systems, workshop machinery or high-powered EV chargers. Upgrading to three-phase also involves an application to the network, so we'll assess your supply and planned use first.
Can an old switchboard contain asbestos?
Yes — some older meter boards contain asbestos. If we think yours might, we'll tell you before any work starts and explain how it needs to be handled safely.
