01 Queensland's rules

What compliant looks like

Queensland's smoke alarm legislation requires photoelectric smoke alarms that are interconnected, so when one alarm sounds, they all do. Homes that are sold or leased have had to meet the standard since 1 January 2022, and from 1 January 2027 it applies to all Queensland homes.

Alarms need to be installed in every bedroom, in hallways that connect bedrooms to the rest of the home, and on every storey. Where there's no hallway, an alarm goes between the bedrooms and the rest of the storey. Alarms must be less than 10 years old, and either hardwired or powered by a non-removable 10-year battery.

We'll check your current alarms, explain what's needed for your property, and install or replace alarms so they're positioned and interconnected correctly.

This is a general summary. Check the Queensland Government's current smoke alarm guidance for the full requirements.

04 Questions

Common questions answered

Do all Queensland homes need interconnected photoelectric smoke alarms?

Yes. Homes being sold or leased have needed them since 1 January 2022, and the requirement extends to all Queensland homes from 1 January 2027. The alarms must be photoelectric, interconnected, and installed in the locations the legislation sets out.

Where do smoke alarms need to be installed?

In every bedroom, in hallways that connect bedrooms with the rest of the home, and on every storey. If there's no hallway, an alarm goes between the bedrooms and the other parts of the storey, and a storey without bedrooms needs an alarm in the most likely path of travel to exit.

Can I replace hardwired smoke alarms with battery alarms?

No. Existing hardwired smoke alarms must be replaced with hardwired alarms. Where there's no existing hardwired alarm, compliant alarms can be powered by a non-removable 10-year battery — and they still need to be interconnected.

How often should smoke alarms be replaced?

Smoke alarms must be replaced before they're 10 years old — check the date printed on the alarm — or sooner if they fail when tested. Alarms should also be tested and cleaned regularly.

I'm a landlord — what do I need to do?

Rental properties must have compliant interconnected photoelectric smoke alarms, and lessors are responsible for testing and cleaning them before each new tenancy or renewal. If your alarms don't meet the standard, we can install compliant alarms — see our Redcliffe smoke alarm page for rentals and units.
